A retaining wall is structure before it is decoration. Built correctly it holds grade for decades; built badly it leans within two rainy seasons.
Walls fail from behind. Water builds up in the soil the wall is holding, pressure has nowhere to go, and the courses start to move. Everything that keeps that from happening is buried and invisible on the finished job: the compacted base, the drainage stone, the pipe, the backfill, and geogrid where the height calls for it.
We build the hidden part properly, then finish the visible part to match the house: segmental block in warm greys and tans, or stacked stone where the property wants texture. Cap courses are set level and consistent, and curves are laid out rather than improvised.
Where a wall creates a terrace, we design the planting above it at the same time, so the finished grade reads as one thing.

Do I need a permit for a retaining wall?
Often, depending on height and location — in Charlotte and Lee County the threshold is usually a wall over a certain height or one holding a slope near a structure. We tell you before we quote rather than after we build.
How are walls drained?
Water behind a wall is what pushes it over, so there is aggregate backfill and drainage behind the face rather than soil packed against it. In Florida the rain arrives all at once, which makes this the difference between a wall and a repair.
